HAPPY EARLY RELEASE DAY! (Teachers love it just as much as you guys do!)

Today we are watching the film 2081, which is a cinematographic version of "Harrison Bergeron." As we watch, we will be looking for similarities and differences. Students will be expected to complete a compare/contrast worksheet, which includes a writing response, for a grade.

Any student who is absent today will need to watch this movie using THIS LINK and complete the worksheet on their own (see Mrs. Keith for the worksheet).

Today all classes are completing the Common Unit Assessment. Any student who is absent will need to see Mrs. Keith as soon as possible to schedule a time to complete the test. This MUST be completed on/before October 1.

Also, a friendly reminder: You only have 2 weeks past a due date to complete the assignment and turn it in with a late slip for partial credit. Once that 2 week window closes, the grade will remain a 0 in PowerSchool. If you completed the assignment but turn in the late slip after the 2 week window closes, the grade will remain a 0 in PowerSchool, per my grading policy. Please make sure you are completing all work on time, and any late work is accompanied by a late slip!

Today we will be taking a deeper look at "Harrison Bergeron" and the major themes using the Theme Tracker you completed last night for homework (can be found on Google Classroom). We will be working through this activity together, but if you were absent today you'll need to complete it on your own (GENERAL ENGLISH ONLY, not STEM or honors). Today we will be finishing up our reading of Harrison Bergeron, as well as completing our Theme Tracker. Please open up both the text and the Theme Tracker from yesterday. You'll likely need to access the Theme Tracker through Google Drive.

As we read today, think about what we know about irony:

It's when you expect one thing but the opposite happens
It makes YOU FEEL a specific way in response to the irony (is this mood or tone?)
How is the author using irony to tell you about their opinion of the topic (is this mood or tone?)

Gradebook Explained

My grade book is on Power School for you to view. There are some things you need to know.

If you have a blank score that is not bad. Often scores are left blank when I do not grade an assignment right away. Sometimes blanks mean a student was absent for an in class experience. The point is do not panic about blank scores.

Zeros however, are a real problem. Students get zeros when they do not turn in an assignment that they should have done. Zeros appear after an assignment is due. If it is an assignment that they can still turn in late, the grade will also be noted as “missing” with an orange symbol. Students have 1 week from the original due date to turn in the work late; however, they are losing points from their grade on the assignment for every day it’s late.

Often I do not enter many assignments until the end of the grading period when projects we have been working on for a few weeks become due. Please understand that I have a family and a life outside of school, and roughly 165 student assignments to grade, so sometimes grading takes longer for larger assignments/projects. Please be patient in waiting for these grades to be entered.

Student grades are based on meeting grade-level standard proficiencies. This is not a points or numbers game. There is rarely extra credit offered, and typically is only offered to students who have done the original assigned work – you must show you can do the minimum in order to receive a chance to go above and beyond (extra credit).

Speaking and Listening points are your daily participation points for a total of 10 points per week; this totals around 100 points for each grading period. This can make-or-break your grade, so participating in class activities and discussion, staying awake, and actively working on-task are encouraged to earn these points every day.
